๐What it means
What proves to a vendor that a call is the estate's, so the vendor serves it from the estate's subscription. It comes in two kinds. A RENEWING sign-in (a plan login, such as the ChatGPT plan behind Codex or the Claude plan) has two parts: an ACCESS part that lets calls through for a limited time (about ten days for Codex), and a single-use RENEWAL code that gets the next access part. A FIXED KEY (a metered vendor's key) does not expire on its own. Either way the full sign-in is held by its keeper alone.
๐Easily confused with
[{"term": "Credential", "distinction": "Credential is the general word for any secret that proves who is calling -- a password, a person's key, a machine key. A sign-in is the credential a vendor subscription accepts."}, {"term": "Operator login", "distinction": "A login is an account on the machine that a person or agent runs as; a sign-in is what the estate shows a VENDOR. A login can make calls only by being handed a call-only sign-in."}, {"term": "Subscription", "distinction": "The subscription is the account that is paid for; the sign-in is what proves a call belongs to it."}]
๐Nuance
'Signing in again' means making a fresh sign-in, which for a renewing sign-in needs a person to approve it in a browser.
