๐What it means
Everything between a track and the slot it runs on. The caller names only the track it is working for; the layer finds that track's slot, gets the caller a call-only sign-in for it through the sign-in door, runs the call under the caller's own login and hands back the answer or a refusal that says what was refused. It is isolated from both sides: a track knows only which slot it points at, and a slot's keeper knows nothing about who calls. So a track can change slot, or a droid change login, without anything else changing.
๐Easily confused with
[{"term": "Adapter", "distinction": "An adapter is one piece of the layer, the code for one kind of slot; the layer is all of it, including choosing the slot and handing out the sign-in."}, {"term": "Lane", "distinction": "A lane says WHO executes work under what accountability; the adapter layer is how any work, on any lane, reaches the model it runs on."}, {"term": "Gateway", "distinction": "People sometimes call this a gateway; in Carolverse there is no separate gateway service -- the adapter layer is the one route, and the sign-in door is its only guarded point."}]
๐Nuance
Ruled 2026-09-26 (cost-center #155: 'an adaptor layer between the tracks and slots, so that it can seamlessly facilitate the switching of slots and tracks') and made isolated from both sides on 2026-09-27 (#172). Both spellings, adapter and adaptor, mean the same thing.
