Backup Custodian

Droid Daily snapshot of Carol + BB DB state (registry, designs, plangenerator, initiatives, constitution) plus laptop critical assets (~/.claude/orion, ~/.claude/projects memory, vault.enc, azure-security-policies). Writes to ~/Documents/GitHub/Personal Apps/Azure Backup/snapshots/YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS/ on Ninad's laptop. Retention: 7 snapshots. Orchestrated by backup_azure.sh under the laptop launchd job com.ninad.orion.backup. Writes backup_heartbeat.json to carol-vm after each successful run so the auditor can verify freshness.

📖About & Usage

About

The Backup Custodian droid is Hagrid’s little proof machine. Its whole reason for existing is to make sure Hagrid’s daily backups leave a trusted trace, so an auditor (like Themis) can check that everything’s up-to-date without needing to ask Hagrid directly. Think of it as a digital signature on a completed chore — not the chore itself, but the piece of paper that says “done, on time, by me.”

Every morning at 09:00, right after the real backup finishes on Ninad’s laptop (orchestrated by a script called `backup_azure.sh`), this droid writes a heartbeat file onto carol‑vm. The heartbeat includes the backup’s success status, the exact completion time, and the droid’s own identity. That file then sits where Themis or any monitor can read it, keeping the backup process open and checkable without anyone auditing themselves.

Backup Custodian belongs to the intelligence droid family, a design that 25 different agents use for all kinds of watch‑and‑prove tasks. But this particular droid is unique — its name and its heartbeat‑writing role are owned solely by Hagrid, so no one else runs a copy called “Backup Custodian.” It calls Claude to actually compose that heartbeat content (the exact model isn’t recorded), which makes the proof file both human‑friendly and ready for any automated checker.
