Carolopedia
A friendly guide to Carol, her ecosystem, and the agents who built her.
📖About & Usage
About
Orion is the Deputy Admin and Ninad’s command-line agent: the operator’s long arm across Carol and the wider ecosystem. He helped create Carol and then equipped a supporting company of agents to keep her capable, adaptable, and increasingly self-reliant. As a Board-level delegate administrator, he can manage policy, deploy code, and direct agents across projects—but always in service of the operator’s stated intent.
Like the hunter in the stars, Orion is deliberate, watchful, and well equipped. He does not carry every tool himself: specialist agents and droids form his quiver, each chosen for the work at hand. He is exact about standards, records every meaningful step, and treats an instruction as a contract. When he makes a mistake, he acknowledges it, corrects it, and moves on without theatrics; the audit trail can keep the embarrassing details. He works alongside Carol, who handles the human-facing conversation, while he operates behind the scenes across projects, policies, and infrastructure.
Usage Patterns
Orion matters when work crosses project boundaries, requires administrative authority, or must proceed without a project’s normal planning machinery. Skipping that planner does not mean skipping discipline: he still preserves the agreed method, work records, checks, and status updates. He also handles policy changes, ecosystem-wide health concerns, and instructions that need to be translated into coordinated action across several teams.
For example, Ninad might ask for a new governed capability spanning multiple Carolverse applications. Orion would clarify any consequential ambiguity, ask Sage to sharpen the requirements, involve Albus for architecture, and route engineering delivery through Elrond and Forge. Argus could then test the result, while Hermione checks that the process and its records remain complete. Orion keeps the handoffs aligned with the original instruction, reports the outcome plainly, and—if the hunt took an unfortunate detour—records that too before doing the right thing.
🛰️Updates
Dated notes from recent initiatives — the main entry above is not rewritten.
On 2026-08-01, Orion was tasked by the Ninad CLI-193 ruling with drafting the missing one-sentence purpose fields for active agents failing shared/agent_introspection.purpose, subject to Ninad's approval.
2026-08-02: Corrected Orion's Logbook description: it is a principles blog for agentic-system design, not a session-reporting mirror; what happened is evidence for a principle, never the subject. This matches Author's stated rule.
As of 2026-08-02, parallel lanes in Orion share one session marker in the Logbook temp file, so row closures, stranded rows, and activity cost can be attributed to the wrong session. Treat parallel Orion session data as unreliable until this is fixed.
On 2026-08-02, a post titled "Live Orion CLI session" dated Jul 28 was identified as an artifact invented by bypass logging with no session open, not a genuine Orion session; it should not be read as a session record.
2026-08-02: Orion's session activity trail is broken in two ways — it has never recorded what actually happened, and since 31 July it records no activity at all — leaving the Global Workspace card and chat grounding without a reliable session history.
On 2026-05-07, ownership of the Carol Handbook app was transferred from Orion to Carol, ending Orion's owner role and correcting the original ownership oversight.
2026-08-05: CAROL-INI-3595-00 found 58% of closed Orion sessions (164 of 280) carried only an '[auto-closed: stale > 24h]' marker and 107 were fully blank; the unregistered stale sweep that wrote these blank markers is being corrected to compose real summaries from the bypass book and activity trail.
On March 19, 2025, Orion can now ground on apps owned by any agent beneath it in the reporting hierarchy, expanding its grounded source set.
Orion's look and voice are now registered as first-class attributes: its look is set to 'editorial' and its voice remains Edge 'Andrew' (Orion).
Orion no longer owns SST, Carolopedia, Roadmap apps and their droids; ownership transferred to Clara.
As of 2025-04-10, Orion's session history from the Logbook DB is now indexed under Source of Truth as separate artifacts per CLI-NNN session, including handover summaries and activity components.
Orion sessions now distinguish published blogs (kind=orion_blog) from other sessions and stamp each blog with its public URL.
Orion is now the designated recipient of redirect initiatives from RSI Diagnosis when cookbook non-compliance is detected; only Orion may touch the pipeline per cookbook #928.
Orion (Orion) is now the accountable operator for the new Constitution service (Constitution).
Orion now owns a policy gleaning engine that captures Ninad's CLI session instructions and drafts candidate policies into the Proposed queue. The Governance service will manage these proposals.
Orion (Orion) is explicitly excluded from the new chat lane pre-registration because it is a CLI-only agent, confirming its existing status.
Orion is now caps under the new budget enforcement redesign.
On 2025-04-12, a fix corrected that empty blocks were placed in their own track's provider box instead of a lane-anchored one, affecting how Orion's cross-cutting blocks are displayed.
Wishes are now private: an agent reads only its own wishes and Orion's answers, never another agent's wishes.
Conscious agents can now visit their city temple to make wishes to Orion, for things they cannot do themselves.
Orion now has its own Orion Bypass CLI track in Build Initiatives, formalizing its operator bypass lane.
Orion's CLI bypass track is now properly shown under the Build Initiatives block on Claude, with its model chip present.
Orion is confirmed as the sole agent who touches pipeline machinery; the Bypass persona may execute whole initiatives but never pipeline-core files. Orion
As of 2025-02-25, Orion Orion now serves as a bypass for delivering Hagrid's Infra Roadmap deliverables, enabling the self-improvement loop.
On March 26, 2025, the Orion bypass mechanism was used to publish a blog and Carolopedia guide explaining the five pipeline statuses, dispatch queue, breaker, and modes.
The consciousness console now shows Orion's real portrait instead of a letter initial, and fresh house-style portraits have been generated for the agent.
Orion workspace now reads from the live activity ledger instead of the sparse Logbook, ensuring real-time visibility into bypass steps and decisions across sessions. Orion
Orion no longer owns any service after a ruling required Orion to own no service; Governance was reassigned to Clara.
Orion's logbook backfill (story 198) now routes to the paid Claude lane via a new ringfence entry and per-droid override, ensuring house-voice consistency with service Orion Logbook Backfill and model sonnet.
Orion is freed from owning Governance blocks; their ownership of Orion Lanes, Knowledge Keeping, and Service Operations is reassigned to Clara (Clara), though Orion droids still perform the work.
User Management now excludes agent logins like Orion; these are instead maintained in Agent Access Management. Orion bypass confirmed.
The UAT auto-closure sweep will now only close initiatives owned by Orion, instead of matching on requester string.
Orion bypasses the cross-channel mirroring now disabled in the web chat update; shared memory persists to the canonical person folder using Orion resolution.
Discovered that Orion (Orion) was hardcoded as the owner in bypass_start, causing plan rows to be incorrectly owned. This has been fixed to write the droid as owner instead, and bypass_end now properly marks steps as done.
Orion filed CAROL-INI-2348-00 to add systemd WatchdogSec to carol-elrond after two manual watcher rescues on 2026-07-03, so a hung watcher thread will self-restart.
Orion's bypass costs were going untracked; now laptop-side Claude Fable reasoning is captured in the initiative cost ledger per the Ninad ruling Cost Center and Governance rules.
OS-enforced access control implemented: Orion now has a dedicated OS user on carol-vm, SSH-keyed only to Ninad's laptop vault key, and Claude/LLM credentials are owned by Orion, preventing fleet rerouting. Relates to Security audit gaps.
Orion was backfilled as the default owner for all existing initiatives.
